Dars Nizami Course
Ethos & Opportunities

The classical and traditional Dars Nizami curriculum, over the course of generations, has maintained its traditional prestige and even today is a benchmark in mastering the classical sciences in order to gain specialisation in understanding the sciences and intricacies of Islam. Over the recent past, learned intellectuals have made subtle alterations and additions in rendering the curriculum accessible and adaptable to changing contexts of time and place. Notably the landmark development in Pakistan in 1957 by the Diya’ al-Ummat, Justice Shaykh Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari (ra), who envisaged the curriculum to provide the same benefits in the changing twentieth century as did the original curriculum of Mulla Nizam al-Din in the eighteenth century. Additional subjects began to also be taught alongside these traditional sciences such as modern languages, political science and economics at his institution.

In this journey of maintaining tradition whilst achieving modern relevance, Jamia Al-Karam has played, and continues to do so, a significant role here in the United Kingdom as regards developing and maintaining a successful and efficient programme of study that is based on the traditional Dars Nizami curriculum whilst acknowledging the changing context of time and place.
